Sugar Land started its history with the local sugar plantation and mill and founded in 1959. “Today, the present refinery is located approximately on the spot where the first mill was built.” It closed it doors in the 1990’s and now it hosts a weekly Farmer’s Market and is set to be reinvented as a historical district.
Throughout much of the 1990s, Sugar Land was considered one of the fastest-growing communities in the nation. Sugar Land boasted the highest growth among Texas’ largest cities per the U.S. Census 2000, with a population of 63,328.
As with growth comes shopping and entertainment. Sugar Land has local attractions that include the Sugar Land Town Square and the First Colony Mall and more recently, the Sugar Land Skeeters, a minor league baseball team.
